How Long Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

a person talks to a therapist about intensive outpatient treatment length

Addiction is a serious mental health disorder that is treatable through outpatient treatment programs. While there is no cure for addiction, people can break their addiction by participating in behavioral therapy and medication-assisted treatment through an addiction treatment program. An intensive outpatient treatment program length can range from several weeks to months and will depend on each person’s severity of addiction and their dedication to reaching their goals.

At 7 Summit Pathways, our mission is to help those who are struggling with addiction or other mental health disorders at our family-like boutique treatment facility. We are a full-service treatment center with a wide range of programs to support people from all walks of life. Programs include group and private therapy sessions in a comfortable indoor/outdoor environment far from the daily stresses and triggers that can interfere with recovery. What Is IOP?

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP for short, is a type of treatment program that is very beneficial in treating addiction, depression, PTSD, and other complex mental health disorders. It combines different types of therapies that focus on the mental and physical aspects of the condition and promotes a healthy and sober lifestyle. The common types of therapies that are available in IOP include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Medication-assisted therapy (MAT)
  • Holistic therapies
  • Family therapy

Together, these therapies create a comprehensive treatment program with a high rate of success. Patients learn healthy coping skills that teach them new ways to manage their symptoms and stop letting their addiction control their behaviors.

At 7 Summit Pathways, when you first arrive at our boutique treatment center, we will perform a full health assessment and answer any questions you have about your experience.  We will give you an estimate of how long intensive outpatient treatment is and set up specific goals for you to meet along your recovery journey.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program Length: What to Know About Your Outpatient Program

How long is intensive outpatient treatment? That will depend mostly on the person and their commitment to reaching their recovery goals. An intensive outpatient treatment program length is typically between 10-12 weeks but can go longer for patients with severe symptoms and who need extra time working with a therapist.

IOP has several stages that help patients reach their goals of long-lasting sobriety:

  1. Weeks 1-2 – During the first few weeks, therapists take the time to build trust and open communication with each patient so they feel comfortable opening up about the issues behind the substance abuse. They work to understand the reasons behind the addiction and use various therapeutic techniques to change the way their thoughts and emotions control their behaviors.
  2. Weeks 3-6 – During this time, therapists will continue to work with each client in group and private therapy sessions to practice coping and communication skills and build their confidence. Patients will continue with behavioral therapy while participating in group discussions and holistic activities like outdoor hikes, meditation and mindfulness, yoga and exercise, painting, and other forms of self-expression.
  3. Weeks 7-12 –  During the final stage of the program, the focus will be on restoring relationships with family and loved ones. All family members will have a chance to talk with a therapist to move past any hurt feelings of frustration caused by the substance abuse. This is a very important step so the family can support long-term recovery long after completing the program.

Enrolling in an intensive outpatient program allows for a safer recovery experience for individuals who can abstain from substance abuse while participating in the program. If they are unable to stop drinking or using drugs, they can enroll in an inpatient program that offers 24/7 support in a secure facility.
