What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) gives you a full daily schedule of treatment without an overnight stay. You attend therapy most days, then return home or to sober living each evening. A clinical assessment decides whether PHP is the right intensity for you right now.
PHP usually combines individual and group therapy with psychiatric care, family work, and skills practice. Because you sleep somewhere other than the treatment center, you get to test what you’re learning in the setting where you’ll actually use it.
PHP may fit if you:
- Need daily structure and accountability, but not around-the-clock supervision
- Are moving on from a more intensive level of care and still want intensive services
- Are managing both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition
- Have work, family, or licensure pressures that make a discreet, structured schedule important
The Day-Night PHP at 7 Summit Pathways
Our Day-Night PHP is built around consistency. You get the same clinical team, the same schedule, and enough time in the program to let real change settle.
Five hours, six days a week.
Our team provides five hours of clinical support six days per week, so your week has a shape you can count on.
A minimum of 28 days.
Each person in our PHP spends at least 28 days in treatment, long enough to stabilize, build skills, and plan what comes next.
An individualized treatment plan.
Our multidisciplinary team builds a plan around your specific needs, which may combine talk therapy with holistic methods like craniosacral and biofeedback therapy.
Psychiatric evaluation.
Our board-certified psychiatrist provides a thorough medical evaluation so any underlying conditions are addressed through dual diagnosis treatment, meaning care for a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time.
Weekly individual therapy.
You’ll meet one-to-one with a licensed therapist every week to work on what’s specific to you.
Daily group and community support.
Group therapy and educational groups meet daily, giving you peer support and a place to practice new skills.
Weekly family support.
Addiction affects the whole family, so we offer weekly family therapy sessions and family educational groups.
Career consulting.
We help you identify your strengths and find or rebuild a career path that works alongside recovery.
Recovery and discharge planning.
When you’re ready to step down, our discharge planners build an aftercare plan with you, including referrals, resources, and a relapse prevention plan.
PHP with Sober Living Housing
You don’t have to figure out where to sleep while you’re doing this work. Patients in our Day-Night PHP can live in our sober living homes, which are structured, supportive environments built for people in early recovery.
The combination matters. During the day you’re in clinical programming; in the evening you’re somewhere with accountability and other people doing the same work. You practice the skills the same day you learn them, without walking back into the environment where the addiction lived.

PHP or IOP: Choosing the Right Level of Care
PHP is a more structured commitment than our intensive outpatient program (IOP) or our outpatient program (OP). All three let you sleep at home or in sober living. What changes is how many hours you’re in treatment and how much independence you’re carrying.
Day-Night PHP | IOP | Outpatient | |
|---|---|---|---|
Clinical hours | Five hours, six days a week | Fewer hours across fewer days | Fewest hours, most flexibility |
Overnight stay | No | No | No |
Evenings | Home or sober living | Home or sober living | Home or sober living |
Minimum length | 28 days | Individualized | Individualized |
Best when | You need daily structure and accountability | You’re ready for more independence with steady support | You’re maintaining recovery alongside work and family |
Your clinical assessment guides the decision, and it isn’t permanent. Many people move between levels as their needs change.

What to Expect in a Day of PHP
Knowing the shape of the day makes the first one easier.
- Check-in and goal setting. You start by reviewing where you are and what you want out of the day.
- Individual or group therapy. Sessions focus on coping skills, relapse prevention, trauma’s role in addiction, and any co-occurring symptoms you’re managing.
- Skills practice. You work on cravings, mood regulation, communication, and boundaries, with room to practice rather than just discuss.
- Educational groups. Groups cover addiction, mental health, medications, and family dynamics, so you understand what’s happening and why.
- Whole-person practice. Yoga, meditation, and other mind-body work help you manage stress and stay present.
- Planning and wrap-up. You update your recovery plan and get ready for the evening ahead.
Evenings are yours, at home or in sober living, and that’s where the day’s work gets tested.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Care in PHP
Substance use and mental health conditions often travel together, and treating one without the other rarely holds. Our PHP is built to address both.
Psychiatric evaluation and ongoing care. Our board-certified psychiatrist evaluates your symptoms and coordinates care for any co-occurring condition, so nothing is treated in isolation.
Therapy that covers both. Individual and group sessions address substance use alongside anxiety, depression, trauma, and related challenges rather than treating them as separate problems.
A team that talks to each other. Your therapist, psychiatrist, and discharge planner work from the same plan, so your care stays consistent from PHP into whatever comes next.
Only a clinician can determine whether you have a co-occurring condition. If you’re unsure, that’s a reason to be assessed, not a reason to wait.

Frequently Asked Questions about PHP
Is PHP a psych ward?
No. A partial hospitalization program is not an inpatient psychiatric unit and does not involve an overnight stay. You attend treatment during the day and go home or to sober living in the evening. Our PHP is an addiction and mental health treatment program, not a hospital.
How long can you stay in PHP?
At 7 Summit Pathways, each person spends a minimum of 28 days in our Day-Night PHP. Your actual length of stay is individualized and depends on your progress, your goals, and your clinical team’s recommendations.
Can I live in sober living housing during PHP?
Yes. Patients in our Day-Night PHP can live in our sober living homes, which offer structure and accountability in the evenings and on days off. It’s a common choice for people whose home environment isn’t a stable place to recover right now, or who are coming to Tampa from elsewhere.
What's the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP involves more clinical hours and more structure than our intensive outpatient program. Both let you sleep at home or in sober living. PHP suits people who need daily accountability; IOP suits people ready for more independence with steady support. Many people move from PHP into IOP as they gain stability.
Do you treat mental health conditions in PHP, or only addiction?
Both. Our board-certified psychiatrist evaluates every patient, and treatment addresses co-occurring mental health conditions alongside substance use rather than separately, including conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms.
Does insurance cover PHP?
Coverage depends on your specific plan and benefits. We accept most insurance plans and will verify your benefits so you know what yours includes before you start. We can’t promise what any given plan will cover, which is exactly why the verification step exists.
How much does PHP cost?
Cost depends on your insurance benefits and your clinical needs, so there’s no single figure we can quote. We’ll verify your coverage, walk you through any remaining costs, and go over financing options if you need them.
Do I need detox before starting PHP?
Detox is a separate level of care. If your assessment shows you need medical detox first, we’ll talk that through and help coordinate it before PHP begins.
