How to Be Motivated

how-to-be-motivated

We can’t control everything like the weather or other people’s opinions, but you can control how to be motivated and to stay motivated toward personal growth.

Be mindful of the steps and actions you take. Motivation carries you to your goals. When you don’t allow anything in your way, you start establishing healthy habits and being more present in the moment. In recovery from substance use addiction, you can motivate yourself to make better choices and be more open to new approaches on your journey to lasting sobriety.

The road to recovery will not always be easy, but I will take it one day at a time, focusing on the moments I’ve dreamed about for so long. — Amanda Lindhout

What Is Self-Motivation?

Self-motivation is the ability to pursue your goals without needing someone else to push you. It means finding the drive within yourself to aim for what you truly want, even when doubts creep in. It’s okay to second guess yourself — many people do. But self-motivation is about recognizing that the goals you set for yourself, no matter how uncertain you may feel, are worth striving for. When you achieve something you set out to do, the sense of accomplishment can be incredibly empowering. Even small steps forward can help build your confidence and remind you of what you’re capable of.

Four Tips for Motivating Yourself

Motivation can be cultivated to help you reach your goals. You don’t need to wake up every morning feeling unstoppable; with the right mix of action and inspiration, you can find motivation even on your slowest days.

Here are four tips on how to be motivated:

  1. Find goals YOU want to achieve: Self-motivation must be powered by goals that are important to you, not someone else. Think about your desires and why you want something.
  2. Imagine reaching your goal: Visualization is a powerful tool. If you can imagine yourself meeting your goal, down to what it would feel like in the moment you succeed. Then, you can stay motivated to make that feeling your reality.
  3. Break your goal down into smaller steps: It’s hard to stay motivated when you bite off more than you can chew. Set small goals you can achieve quickly that will take you to your bigger goal.
  4. Surround yourself with positivity: When you hear voices saying “you can,” you tend to believe them. Positive people around you will build greater confidence and lead you to positive outcomes.

Quotes for Motivating Yourself

Need to motivate yourself quickly? Read these quotes for some immediate momentum:

  • “If something terrifies you, you should totally do it because it terrifies you. And then you’ll do it and you’ll realize what you’re capable of.” — Jonathan Saccone-Joly
  • “If you don’t put anything in place, do not expect miraculous results to appear.” ― Germany Kent
  • “I was thinking one day, and I realized that if I just had somebody behind me all the way to motivate me, I could make a big difference. Nobody came along like that, so I just became that person for myself.” ― Unknown

Simply starting a task, even when you aren’t really in the mood, can lead you to the motivation you seek. When you want something, you can attain it. Keep this in mind throughout your recovery journey.
