We live in an unprecedented time. Now more than ever, a strong social support network is essential to your mental, emotional and even physical well-being. If you have a friend who’s in lockdown, either due to COVID-19 or for personal reasons, there are a few things you can do to help them through this difficult time and combat the loneliness they’re undoubtedly experiencing.
How to Help a Friend During COVID-19
If your friend or a loved one is in isolation or quarantined, here are some things you can do as part of their strong social support network.
1. Stay Connected
The simplest thing you can do is start a conversation. Whether by phone, video chat or text message, communication will help your friend realize that they are not alone. Hearing your voice and seeing your face will also remind them that there are people who care.
2. Keep Them Up-to-Date
Disconnection is a serious side effect of isolation. To combat this, keep your friend updated on the latest news. Reach out to share personal info, world events or even the latest Hollywood buzz.
3. Send a Thoughtful Gift
Whether it’s a handwritten note that you send through the mail or a care package dropped at their doorstep, these small acts of love will brighten your friend’s day and show them how much you care.
4. Show Your Support
Listen more than you speak. Your friend is probably experiencing some intense emotions — sorrow, frustration, anger. Show compassion and validate their experiences rather than trying to solve them. The goal is to stay connected and empathize with your friend.
5. Experiment With Some Long-Distance Fun
While you may be unable to grab a coffee or go to a movie, quarantine offers an opportunity to try something new. Just because you’re physically distanced doesn’t mean you can’t have fun together. Try to:
- Share a meal over a video chat.
- Exercise together.
- Sync up your next movie or TV watching session.
- Play online games.
- Start a book club.
- Hold a virtual dance party.
Any of these creative activities can help combat loneliness.
6. Connect Your Friend With Outside Resources
A lack of social support during isolation can lead to serious health issues, such as depression, anxiety or even addiction. If you suspect that your friend’s time in isolation is taking a severe toll on their mental or physical well-being, you can help them identify additional support systems — including mental health professionals and addiction specialists.
