Addiction doesn’t just impact an individual but entire communities. Family, friends, and coworkers are all affected by the cycle of addiction, which is why recovery is so important. The Wellbriety Movement is an approach to recovery from a Native American perspective. It helps guide people through recovery and improve the long-term effect they have on those around them.
7 Summit Pathways is a Wellbriety Certified Treatment Center. Using the medicine wheel and 12-step principles, we help our patients work through their addiction treatment so they can build a better future. What Is the Wellbriety Movement?
The Wellbriety Movement is a holistic approach to addiction recovery that has its roots in Native American cultures and traditions. It is based on the belief that healing from addiction requires more than just abstaining from substances—it also requires addressing the underlying issues that contribute to substance abuse. The Wellbriety Movement focuses on restoring physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health through practices such as meditation, prayer, sweat lodges, talking circles, and other traditional activities. These practices are intended to help individuals reconnect with their culture and community while developing healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with life’s challenges.
The Four Laws of Change
Guiding the Wellbriety Movement are the four laws of change, which set the stage for healing current and future generations of Indigenous peoples. These four laws are:
- Change is from within – People must have a desire to change, which guides their conscious efforts, choices, and behaviors in daily life.
- In order for development to occur, it must be preceded by a vision – People must actively discover and share thoughts, feelings, and images that can help them move forward in recovery.
- A great learning must take place – Everyone needs to be part of the change for it to be positive and last. Supporting those in recovery and learning from them can help improve close and communal relationships.
- You must create a Healing Forest – After entering recovery, people should become an inspiration to those around them to inspire lasting change, which can prevent others from abusing drugs or alcohol.
People who follow the Wellbriety Movement focus not only on substance use, but also on intergenerational trauma, abuse, violence, and mental health concerns.
How Can Wellbriety Practices Help with Addiction Recovery?
Wellbriety practices can be an effective complement to established clinical treatment methods for addiction recovery. They can provide individuals with a sense of purpose and connection to their culture while helping them develop healthy coping skills for managing stress and difficult emotions. Additionally, they can help individuals build self-esteem and gain insight into their own behavior patterns so they can make better decisions in the future.
